Furniture consumption has been affected by economic recession. Consumers have tended to postpone furniture purchases, primarily due to a fall in the housing market and general economic uncertainty. Deep discounting has been a feature of the retail trade, especially in the low – medium price range. Many smaller retailers have ceased to trade. The overall market improved since 2004 with a trend to designer-influenced furniture but at a lower price level. Furniture supply is abundant but fragmented.
